Although water still is the single most critical element causing damage to a building, newer products, better installation techniques, and improved drainage systems, have significantly mitigated problems associated with water infiltration into the substructure. These problems include mold, a musky smell, and damage to personal property.

A utilized substructure is considered part of the building envelope and must be designed to perform like the other parts of the envelope: it must be protected from water and moisture infiltration. This includes the right product, proper installation, and a well designed and installed drainage system that is project and site specific.
